8 gorgeous garden arch ideas for spaces big and small

Garden arches filled with colourful blooms are a classic country garden favourite. Whether dripping in roses or framing a garden path, they turn simple spots into stunning showpieces.

When you think of a garden arch, your mind probably jumps to the classic garden arch. But while these much-loved curves are awesome, they’re not the only arch around!

Garden arches actually come in lots of different styles, like our easy-to-build Round Garden Arch, or in mini form as arched-shaped trellises, like our Classic Arch Trellis and simple PVC-coated stainless steel Jack Garden U-hoops.

Here are some Jack-inspired ideas for adding arches to your outdoor spaces.

1. All eyes on the grand entrance – Great for houses and gardens!

There’s nothing like a garden arch to turn a simple walkway into a grand entrance. Add a Round Garden Arch over a gravel path, stepping stones or even your lawn. It will instantly give your landscaping a lift.

The contemporary wide, round curves deliver a real ‘wow’ factor. They’re not something you see every day, so you can make your back or front yard stand out!

Plant it up with climbing roses or wisteria for that romantic, cottage garden feel. Add some colour and scent with bougainvillea or jasmine. Or try mandevilla or passionfruit vine for a modern tropical look. You could even pop one up for a party and cover it in balloons!

2. Give your pots some gorgeous curves – Great for small spaces and balconies!

Do you have sad-looking planters on your patio or balcony?

Simply pop a Garden U-hoop or the legs of an Arch Trellis into the centre of the soil to give it some vertical flair. They add height and interest. And when used as support for blooming plants, even simple pots become total standouts!

U-hoops are perfect for keeping things simple. Meanwhile, the Classic Arch trellis has a unique, geometric design within its curves, offering a more decorative look.

3. Grow a tunnel of beautiful blooms – Great for large outdoor spaces!

If you’ve got the space, go all in on the magic. Line up three or four Jack Coventry Arches (NZ-only) in a row, or DIY your own classic wire mesh arches using TBC to create your own storybook walkway.

Train flowering climbers, such as clematis, jasmine, or old-school climbing roses, up each side and let them do their thing—twisting, reaching, and eventually meeting in the middle, from arch to arch like leafy, fragrant lovers.

The result? A tunnel of blooms that’s part fairytale and part showstopper. It’s perfect for a backyard wedding—at a price that doesn’t break the budget!

4. Take your vegies vertical – Great for big or small spaces!

Arches aren’t just for flowers. They suit edibles, too!

A large garden archway can handle heavier climbing fruits, such as grapes, passionfruit, and cherry tomatoes. Set one up over a raised bed or along a garden path and train your vines up and over for a lush, fruitful archway.

In the right climate, grapes grow beautifully in Aussie backyards. And they look stunning draping from above. You’ll feel like you’re in Italy!

For smaller spaces or lighter crops, try U-hoops or a large arch trellis. Snow peas, beans, and cucumbers will happily climb their way up, giving you more produce without taking over your garden beds. Bonus: it’s easier on the back come harvest time!

5. Divide your garden into different spaces – Great for houses and bigger gardens!

You don’t have to rely on fences to create separation. A garden arch, like our Round Garden Arch, is a clever (and much prettier!) way to split your outdoor space into zones.

Pop one up to mark the line between the lawn and vegie patch. Or place it at the entrance to your firepit nook, deck or chill-out corner. It’s a visual cue that says ‘something special happens here’, without needing to build walls or lay pavers.

Whether you’re going for structure and flow or want to create some garden drama, an arch does the job beautifully. And it keeps your backyard feeling open and inviting.

6. Create a mini privacy screen – Great for small spaces and balconies!

Tuck an arch trellis or two into the corner of your balcony or patio to grow a waist-high wall of green or colour that doubles as a little seclusion.

Fast-growing climbers like star jasmine, sweet pea, or even dwarf passionfruit add height, fragrance and beauty. They also help block nosey neighbours without blocking the breeze. It’s a cosy, low-fuss way to turn a plain outdoor nook into a lush, leafy escape.

You can even hang fairy lights through the trellis for a soft evening glow. Or add little potted herbs at the base for bonus greenery (and food flavour!). Proof you don’t need a big garden to create a little magic.

7. Give your garden a curved edged – Great for homes and gardens!

Line up Jack U-hoops in the ground along the edge of your garden beds. Or pathways to guide plants where you want them and keep the rest in check.

These little arch-shaped helpers are perfect for taming messy borders, training low-growing climbers like nasturtiums or sweet peas, or giving a bit of backbone to floppy flowers and tomato vines.

They’re great around veggie patches, too! Marking out planting zones or helping you create natural little garden rooms without fencing things off. And because they’re sturdy but subtle, they blend into the greenery while doing all the hard work behind the scenes.

8. A dream after-dark backdrop – Great for homes and gardens!

Wrap a Round Garden Arch in fairy lights or solar festoons and watch your garden go from ‘nice’ to ‘seriously stunning’.

Have mates over for an evening barbie. Or sneak out for a sunset cuppa on a swinging loveseat. These glowing accents instantly light up the mood of any outdoor space.

For an extra touch of magic, pair those twinkling lights with plants that catch the eye at night. Try night beauties like moonflowers or jasmine, whose sweet fragrance and delicate petals shine under the soft light.

If you’re after colour, opt for evening primrose or evening-scented stock, which burst open as the sun sets, taking you away from reality.
