About Oxy-Shield
Oxy-Shield is a specially formulated landscaping steel designed to impart a decorative rust-look without the inherent degradation of regular steel. The surface oxidises to form a protective coating resistant to corrosion and flaking – a durable long-lasting steel.
Rustic tones will further develop and enhance over time, to accelerate the effect, spray regularly with a fine mist of water. With a rich, earthy patina – a favourite amongst landscapers, it blends effortlessly into any backyard or courtyard setting.
Handy Hints:
- Planting:
For direct soil planting, line the bottom of the planter with 50-100mm of wood chip or gravel before filling with soil. Alternatively, place a potted plant directly inside, ideally with a water-well base for indoor use. - Safety – Once filled, the planter may be extremely heavy so make sure you have it where you want it before you fill it up.
- Position carefully – rust run-off can stain surrounding areas such as decking, tiles and pavers.
- Always wear protective gloves and glasses during installation.
Is it safe to grow vegetable in Jack Oxy-Shield Planters and Rings?
It is absolutely safe to grow edible plants inside of a steel container, whether that container is galvanized, power coated, or a weathered landscaper’s steel like Oxy-Shield.
Steel itself is made from mined iron and is a sustainable and recyclable resource. Steel is often treated with zinc for durability, and while a small amount of zinc may seep into your soil over time, this will not impact the organic soil inside the bed. Actually, zinc is a mineral that’s naturally found in soil and is a plant micronutrient. You actually need to take in a small amount of zinc to survive, and guess what… so do your plants!
Any zinc taken up by the soil or the plants growing inside your Oxy-Shield beds will not be enough to negatively impact you or be considered harmful.
And if there is a concern with corroding steel contaminating soil and plants, it’s good to know that Oxy-Shield completely resists corrosion and they’re completely safe for growing food. The amount of iron-oxide released into the soil during the rust process is non-toxic and will not disadvantageously affect plants.
