Birdwood Primary School Garden Blog

Birdwood Primary School, in the northern Adelaide Hills, is celebrating Chapter 146, its 146th year of providing education for local K-6 children.  One of its many innovative educational tools is its fruit and vegetable garden, which has been part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden programme for the past 13 years.  Under the direction of garden specialist, Melissa Rosenberg, and the capable green thumbs of the school’s 296 students, the garden grows a rotating crop of season produce that is the children use in their weekly cookery classes in the school kitchen.

We have been supplying products such as pots, growing frames, vertical growing kits, garden edging, mesh, wildlife deterrents – and much more – is delighted to play a small part in this exciting venture and will be providing much of the horticultural products required to nurture plentiful, healthy crops.

Each term we aim to give you an update on the activities in the garden via this blog – hope you enjoy it!

The children have put in a lot of hard work over the past couple of terms. Oxy-Shield garden edging was used in the wicking bed area – which was previously an unloved piece of lawn. These wicking beds will become learning and sensory spaces for R/1 students ‘The Wurley’ (local Aboriginal name for a nest). Compost bins have been fed and turned, seedlings planted, plentiful crops harvested – take a look at the cherry tomatoes and peaches – eggs collected and delicious dishes prepared and devoured!
