Create a small space garden on a budget

Create a small space garden on a budget in Australia

Easy, low-cost ways to grow your own food in a small space.

Keen to grow your own food but short on space (and cash)? Good news. You can start a small space garden on a budget with a few pots, a bag of potting mix and the herbs and vegies you already buy every week. A sunny balcony, courtyard or tiny backyard is heaps of room, and no, you don’t need a green thumb. Any colour thumb will do.

With grocery prices still climbing across Australia, growing your own is an easy way to save money on fresh produce. (Four bucks for a sad bunch of basil? Not on our watch.) Basil, parsley, lettuce, tommies and chillies are cheap to start, quick to grow and happy in pots. Stick to what you actually eat, so every harvest knocks something off the shopping list and nothing goes limp in the crisper.

Jack will show you how to get your little budget garden up and growing. Now’s the perfect thyme to dig in.

Your step-by-step guide

  1. Find the sunniest spot on your balcony, courtyard or backyard

Most herbs and vegies need at least 6 hours of sun a day.
  2. Pick budget-friendly pots and containers for small spaces

  3. Choose easy herbs and vegies to grow in pots

Tip: Grow what you’ll actually eat. If nobody touches kale, don’t plant kale.
  4. Fill with quality potting mix and plant your seedlings

Give them room to breathe. Overcrowded plants compete for water and nutrients (and nobody likes a squeeze).

  5. Water, position and protect your container garden

Pop a finger in the soil every few days. If it’s dry to your first knuckle, it’s time for a drink.

  6. Harvest your homegrown food and enjoy the savings

Pick little and often, and watch your grocery bill shrink.
